Macular Degeneration is an eye condition that affects your central, critical vision that leads to significant and permanent vision loss. It is the leading cause of blindness in Australia.
The changes are initially gradual and therefore may be difficult to notice at first. But these minor changes can be picked up as part of our Optical Fingerprint™ assessment of your eyes, making it absolutely essential to have regular check-ups, especially if you have a family history of macular degeneration.
There are typically two types of macular degeneration: Dry and Wet Macular Degeneration.
While gradual vision loss is more common with Dry Macular Degeneration, there are currently no treatments available for this type of macular degeneration. However, some studies have shown certain diets may help to slow down its progression.
Wet macular degeneration tends to involve more sudden and dramatic central vision loss, but treatments are now available, which are able to slow down its progression, prevent further deterioration and in some cases, help to restore some parts of the vision as well. Insightful Eyecare will guide you through this process, advise on the best treatment in your situation and if required, refer you to an ophthalmologist for surgical intervention.
