Understanding Presbyopia: What you need to know
Presbyopia
2025 10 April

Presbyopia is a natural part of aging that affects everyone at some point in their lives. If you’ve found yourself holding your smartphone or book a little farther away to bring the text into focus, you’re likely experiencing this common condition. While it’s normal, understanding presbyopia can help you address it effectively and maintain your quality of vision.

What is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is a gradual loss of the eye’s ability to focus on nearby objects. It typically begins around the age of 40 and continues to progress until around 65. Unlike nearsightedness or farsightedness, which are caused by the shape of the eye or cornea, presbyopia stems from the natural aging of the eye’s lens.

The lens of the eye becomes less flexible over time, making it harder to adjust focus between objects at varying distances. This rigidity affects how light is focused on the retina, leading to blurry vision when looking at close objects.

Symptoms of Presbyopia include:

Difficulty reading small print, especially in low light.

The need to hold reading material farther away.

Eye strain or headaches after close-up tasks like reading or using a computer.

Blurred vision at normal reading distance.

Ways to manage Presbyopia:

Reading Glasses – Reading glasses are an affordable and straightforward solution for most cases.

Prescription Lenses – Bifocal or progressive lenses can correct presbyopia while also addressing other vision issues like nearsightedness or astigmatism.

Contact Lenses – Multifocal contact lenses or monovision lenses (one lens for near vision, the other for distance) are good alternatives for those who prefer not to wear glasses.

Surgical Options – Procedures like laser surgery or lens replacement surgery can provide longer-term solutions. But there are limitations and a further discussion with an optometrist/ophthalmologist is recommended.

Lifestyle Adjustments – Using adequate lighting, taking breaks during close-up tasks, and holding reading materials at a comfortable distance can alleviate symptoms. However, an intervention will still likely be required.

Presbyopia is an inevitable and natural part of life, but it doesn’t have to interfere with your daily activities. With modern solutions and a proactive approach, you can continue to see clearly and comfortably.
