Protecting Your Eyes Year-Round: The Importance of Sun Protection

As the sun heats up, it is a good time to remind ourselves that sun protection is not just about skin. While sunscreen and broad-brimmed hats do a lot of the heavy lifting, sunglasses deserve a permanent place in your daily routine. UV radiation can cause lasting damage to your eyes over time, and the right pair of sunglasses is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent it.

Why Sunglasses Are Not Just for Summer

It is a common misconception that sunglasses are only necessary during the warmer months. In reality, UV rays are present year-round. Even on overcast days or during cooler seasons, up to 80% of UV radiation can still reach your eyes. That means your risk of UV-related eye damage does not take a break in winter, and neither should your eye protection.

The cumulative nature of UV damage is what makes consistent protection so important. Each unprotected hour outdoors adds to a lifetime of exposure, and the effects on your eye health can compound significantly over the years.

How UV Exposure Affects Your Eyes

Prolonged exposure to UV radiation without adequate protection has been linked to a number of serious eye conditions.

Cataracts

Cataracts develop when the natural lens of the eye becomes progressively clouded, leading to blurry and dimmed vision. UV exposure is one of the key factors that accelerates this process. The good news is that consistently wearing UV-blocking sunglasses can help slow the onset and reduce your risk.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Age-Related Macular Degeneration affects the retina and can lead to central vision loss over time. Research indicates that excessive UV exposure can accelerate its development, particularly in those already predisposed to the condition. Protecting your eyes from UV radiation early and consistently may help slow its progression.

Photokeratitis

Sometimes referred to as corneal sunburn, photokeratitis is caused by short-term overexposure to UV rays. Symptoms include redness, watering eyes, and sensitivity to light. While it typically resolves on its own, repeated episodes can cause longer-term damage to the cornea.

Pterygium (Surfer’s Eye)

Pterygium is a fleshy growth on the surface of the eye that can cause irritation and, in more advanced cases, affect vision. UV radiation — particularly when reflected off water, sand, or snow — is a significant contributing factor. In severe cases, surgical removal may be required.

Skin Cancer Around the Eyes

The skin surrounding the eyes is thin, delicate, and particularly vulnerable to UV-induced damage. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are not uncommon in this area. Wearing sunglasses with good coverage, alongside a broad-brimmed hat, offers meaningful protection for this often-overlooked zone.

What to Look for When Choosing Sunglasses

Not all sunglasses offer the same level of protection. When shopping for a pair, here are the features that matter most:

  • 100% UV protection — Look for lenses that block both UVA and UVB rays. This is the single most important factor in protecting your eyes from long-term UV damage. UV400 rating is the gold standard.
  • Adequate coverage — Larger frames and wraparound styles provide better protection by reducing UV exposure from the sides and above.
  • Polarised lenses — Polarised lenses cut glare from reflective surfaces such as water, wet roads, and sand. They are particularly useful for driving, hiking, and time spent near the water. Always ensure polarised lenses also carry full UV protection — the two are not the same thing.
  • Quality construction — Well-made frames and lenses hold up to daily wear and maintain their protective qualities over time. A cheap pair that warps or scratches quickly is not doing its job.

UV Protection Is a Year-Round Commitment

Because UV damage accumulates gradually, wearing sunglasses consistently, not just when it feels bright outside, is what makes the real difference over the course of your lifetime. Building the habit of reaching for your sunglasses every time you head outdoors, regardless of the season or the cloud cover, is one of the most proactive things you can do for your long-term vision.

Alongside sunglasses, a broad-brimmed hat and daily sunscreen on the skin around your eyes adds an important extra layer of defence. Try to limit prolonged direct sun exposure during peak UV hours between 10 am and 4 pm, where possible.
