Natural Approaches to Soothing Dry Eyes

Dry eye is a common condition that can cause discomfort, burning, blurred vision and watery eyes. While lubricating eye drops (preferably preservative-free) remain a cornerstone of treatment, simple natural strategies can complement them to help reduce symptoms and improve eye comfort.

Understanding Dry Eye

Dry eye disease occurs when the eye’s tear film is out of balance. The tear film has three layers:

  • Oil layer – produced by the meibomian glands in the eyelids, prevents tears from evaporating
  • Water layer – produced by the lacrimal glands, provides moisture and nutrients
  • Mucous layer – spreads tears evenly across the eye surface

One of the most common causes of dry eye is meibomian gland dysfunction, where the oil glands don’t work properly, leading to evaporative dry eye. Supporting these glands is key to maintaining comfortable, healthy eyes.

Warm Compresses and Lid Massage for Oil Gland Function

Warm compresses help your meibomian glands release oils to stabilise the tear film. The key is warming the eyelids to about 40 to 45°C for 5 to 10 minutes. There are a few ways to achieve this:

  • Warm cloth – soak a clean cloth in warm (40–45°C) water, wring out excess and apply to closed eyelids for 5–10 minutes. Cloths cool quickly, so reheat as needed.
  • Wheat bag – heat to 40–45°C in the microwave and apply to closed eyelids for 5–10 minutes.
  • Specialised heat masks – available through our practice, heated to 40–45°C and applied to closed eyelids for 5–10 minutes.

After applying heat, gently massage your eyelids with clean fingertips. Press gently just under the lower eyelashes for about 10 seconds, working your way along the lid margin, then repeat on the upper lid. This helps push oil through the glands.

Squeeze Blink Exercise

Blinking exercises stimulate tear production and improve tear film stability.

  • Gently close your eyes for 2 seconds
  • While closed, gently squeeze your eyelids together for 2 seconds (avoid scrunching your face)
  • Gently open and relax your eyes
  • Repeat this sequence 5 times

Perform this exercise a few times daily, especially during long periods of digital screen use.

Nutrition for Dry Eyes

Numerous studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids support eye health and may help reduce dry eye symptoms. Good sources include fatty fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel, as well as plant-based options like flaxseed and chia seeds.

Environmental Tips

  • Avoid sitting directly in the line of heating or air conditioning vents
  • Use a humidifier in dry spaces
  • Take screen breaks with the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds

Eye Drops and Professional Guidance

  • Use lubricating eye drops regularly; preservative-free options are preferred
  • Avoid drops labelled for “red or sore eyes”, as these can artificially constrict blood vessels and worsen dryness over time
  • See your optometrist for a full dry eye assessment to ensure you’re using the most suitable drops for your condition

Morning Symptoms to Watch

If you wake with crustiness around your eyes, or your eyes feel very dry as soon as you open them, mention this to your optometrist. It can indicate bacterial overgrowth on your eyelids or eyelashes, or that you may be sleeping with your eyes partially open, and your optometrist will be able to suggest the most relevant solutions.

Dry eye is a multi-factorial condition that requires comprehensive assessment and a holistic treatment approach. We always recommend a dry eye workup with your optometrist to ensure the most appropriate treatment and to rule out any underlying conditions that may be contributing.

If dry eye symptoms are affecting your daily comfort, our optometrists at Insightful Eye Care can help. Book a comprehensive dry eye assessment at our Richmond or Dingley Village practice, and we’ll work with you to find the most effective treatment plan for your eyes.
